This article discusses the cycle of violence and ways to address it in South Sudan. The article finds that the elites’ ownership of cattle is one of the main drivers of guns proliferation and cycles of violence, with the elite using cattle migration as a means for land grab. This report looks into the opportunities and constraints of local initiatives for peace and their contribution to the resolution of conflict at the local level, with a particular focus on women initiatives. Secondly, it seeks to explore in what ways outsiders could provide meaningful contributions to such initiatives. The research focuses on the case of local initiatives for peace in southern Sudan, and in particular on the Sudanese Women’s Voice for Peace, a Sudanese NGO.
