This paper explores the PoC concept and the culture of protection in the context of Sudan. It addresses the protection discourse as perceived by various actors in the field, and approaches the discourse in the nexus of PoC and culture of protection. The present paper demonstrates that whereas a narrow definition of PoC runs the risk of repelling actors from the protection-agenda, mainstreaming a culture of protection drawing on wider principles seems worthwhile in order to be comprehensive in terms of including as many actors as possible. The paper explores key issues that are likely to be as relevant for protection and PoCs in South Sudan today as they were in 2008.
