This WFP’s update highlights the effects of the conflict in Ukraine on availability and access to food in the East Africa region. The update documents that the price of a local food basket in the region has increased by 55.6 percent in twelve months as a result of the rise in energy prices and inflation. While governments are trying to control price spikes across most of the region, pump prices have soared compared to the pre-conflict levels, with fuel prices in conflict-stricken Somalia and South Sudan almost doubling compared to October 2021. Another factor exacerbating food prices in the region is linked to poor performing local currencies, with the South Sudanese Pound phenomenally depreciating in the region.
